The Lady Leaf basketball team took to the court in their first of two holiday tournaments, but Geneseo ran up against some tough opponents at the Ottawa Holiday Basketball Tournament as the squad went 1-2 in its first three games.

Geneseo vs.?Prairie Central
In a make up contest from Dec. 16, Geneseo faced Prairie Central on Dec. 20, but was defeated, 52-37.

After the first quarter, the Lady Leafs only trailed by one, 14-13, but Central began to pull away before the half as the squad scored 14 points and held Geneseo to nine. Central led the contest, 28-22 at halftime.

Central’s defense came out in the third quarter and held the Lady Leafs to only four points, while its offense hit 10 points to extend its lead to 38-26. Central continued to knock down the baskets in the fourth quarter with 14 points, while Geneseo scored 11.

Seven Lady Leafs put points on the board for Geneseo against Central with Allie Hudson leading the team with 12 on six field goals.

Jordan Wagner added six points on three shots from the field, while Claire Wiese and Sammi Miller each posted five, both with a shot from beyond the arc and a field goal.

Maggie Bergeson finished the game with four points on two field goals, while Jena Rice added three points as she went 3-for-4 from the line and Nicole Adams hit a field goal for her two points on the day.

Geneseo vs. Streator

On Dec. 20, Geneseo squared off against Streator in the Ottawa Holiday Tournament and nabbed a 52-28 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Leafs led 13-9 after the first quarter, which was followed by another 13-point second quarter for a 26-15 advantage at the half.

In the third quarter, Geneseo held Streator to only two points, while posting 13 points of their own for a 39-17 lead entering the fourth. It was 13s across the board for Geneseo the entire night, scoring another 13 points in the fourth for the win.

Hudson led the way for Geneseo with 13 points, hitting six shots from the field and one free throw.

Rice followed with eight points on four field goals, while Adams and Meghan Wethington combined for 12 with six apiece — Adams with three field goals and Wethington hit one shot from beyond the arc and three free throws.

Miller added five points to the win with a three pointer and a field goal, while Mel Piekos scored four on a field goal and two free throws.

Others contributing to the win were Wagner and Jessie DeFauw each with three points — Wagner on a three pointer and DeFauw, a field goal and a free throw; and Bergeson and Alli DeSmith each with two points, both with a field goal.

Geneseo vs. Lincoln Park

The Lady Leafs dug themselves into a hole early Dec. 17 against Lincoln Park and had a hard time trying to recover as Geneseo was defeated 50-33 in the first game of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament.

Geneseo fell behind to Lincoln Park, 21-2 in the first quarter and then only managed to score nine in the second for a 27-11 Lincoln Park lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Leafs outscored Lincoln Park, 16-11 to cut Lincoln Park’s lead to 11, 38-27. Lincoln Park capped the game off in the fourth quarter as the squad scored 12 points to Geneseo’s six for the 17-point victory.

Geneseo was paced by Hudson who scored 16 of the team’s 33 on seven shots from the field and two free throws.

DeFauw finished the game with five points on two field goals and one free throw, while Wiese added four points as she hit two field goals.

Others contributing to the effort were Miller with three points on a shot from beyond the arc; Wagner and Rice, two points apiece, both with a field goal; and Wethington, one point on a free throw.

The Lady Leafs (6-5 overall and 1-1 in the NCIC) will next compete in the Dixon Holiday Tournament at 6 p.m. Dec. 27 against Walther Lutheran.
