Both Geneseo High School freshmen boys’ basketball teams took care of business on the court this past week as Leafs swept Bureau Valley and Dixon.

On Jan. 21, the Geneseo A team defeated Bureau Valley, 67-35. The Leafs posted 16 points in the first quarter and 13 in the second for a 29-13 lead at the half. Geneseo knocked down 19 points in the third quarter for a 48-22 advantage and another 19 in the fourth to seal the victory.

Alec Cheek was the leading scorer with 18 points, draining four shots from beyond the arc and three field goals.

J. J. Rivera and Tyler Rusk posted 11 points apiece — Rivera with five shots from the field and a free throw and Rusk on four field goals and a three pointer.

Derek Mitchell knocked down three treys for his nine points for the game, while Nicholas Norris scored six on three field goals.

Joshua DuBois and Ryan Williams finished with five points apiece, both on two field goals and a free throw, while Brian Johnson went 2-for-4 from the line for his two points.

The B squad capped off the sweep of Bureau Valley with a 24-12 win. The Leafs scored 11 points in the opening minutes for the 11-4 lead at halftime and then hit another 13 to claim the win.

Steven Timbrook led the team with seven points on a three pointer and two field goals. Zachary Taber added six points on three field goals, followed by August Denys with five on a two field goals and  a free throw. Norris hit two field goals for four points, while Rusk scored two points on a field goal.

The freshman squad notched a 59-22 conference win over visiting Dixon Jan. 26, while the B team won 45-22.

Geneseo jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back after that. The Leafs hit 18 points in the second quarter and held Dixon to six for a 39-11 halftime score. The Leafs were held to single digits in the third quarter with nine points and extended its advantage to 48-19. In the fourth quarter, Geneseo scored another 11 points to put away the game.

Cheek led the way again for Geneseo with 14 points as he sank two three pointers and four field goals.

Rusk  and Rivera followed with 10 points, both with five shots from the field, while Drew DeCap hit four field goals for his eight points.

Mitchell contributed five points with a three pointer and a field goal, while Johnson scored four points on four free throws.

Rounding out the effort were DuBois with three points on a field goal and free throw; Williams and Taber, two points apiece, both with a field goal and Timbrook, one point with a free throw.

In the B squad match up, Geneseo took down the Dukes, 45-22. The Leaf offense drained 24 points in the first half and 21 in the second for the win. Geneseo led the game, 24-9 at the half.
Norris was the leading scorer with 12 points, hitting four field goals, a three pointer and a free throw.

Taber finished with 11 points on three field goals and went 5-for-5 from the line, while DeCap knocked down four shots from the field for his eight points.

Denys added six points on three field goals, followed by Timbrook with four on two field goals.
Keegan Wigant and Johnson ended the game with two points apiece, each with a field goal.

The Leafs will be in action next when they travel to Alleman for a 10 a.m. game Jan. 31, followed by a road contest with Ottawa at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 and another road game at 6 p.m. Feb. 3 with LaSalle-Peru.
