Arthur J. Ver Straete, 88, of Moline, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 17, at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation was held two hours prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial was in Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the family.

He was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Geneseo, the son of John Jacob and Elizabeth (VanDevoorde) Ver Straete. He married Betty Keely May 3, 1948, in Kewanee. He worked at International Harvester and Chek and Wessel. He also worked for the Rock Island Lines as an engineer for 28 years. He then worked at, and retired from, Franks Foundry, Moline, as a tool and die maker. He enjoyed woodworking,  making cottage furniture and trunks. He enjoyed bird watching and the outdoors. He also enjoyed reading and had a huge library and was quite the historian. Most of all he loved playing with and teasing his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Moline; children and spouses, Georgia and Mike Wozniak of Colona Township, Kathy Ver Straete of Moline, Connie and Jim Godwin of West Minster, Colo., and John and Debbie Ver Straete of Ridgeway, Colo.; a sister and spouse, Monete and Joe Poole of Kewanee; grandchildren, Grey Summers, Cap Godwin, Jenny Mendoza, Audrey Summers, Jessie Ver Straete, Caroline Ver Straete, Nicole Ver Straete and Angela Ver Straete, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marjorie L. Harington.
