The Geneseo boys’ basketball team went for the sweep in non-conference action over the weekend as the Leafs started things off with a win over Rock Falls and then nabbed a victory over Davenport West.

Geneseo vs. Davenport West

In the annual Genesis PSP Shootout (Illinois/Iowa Shootout), the Leafs posted a win for the Illinois side as they came out and defeated Davenport West, 49-35, Dec. 19 at Augustana College. The Illinois side won the contest, four games to two.

Geneseo and Davenport West kept things close in the first quarter as the Leafs scored 12 points and Davenport West added 10. The Leafs began to pull away in the second quarter as they knocked down 15 points and held Davenport West to eight. Geneseo led the contest, 27-18 at the half.

After the break, both squads were held to single digits in the third quarter, both with six points to make it a 33-24 game in favor of Geneseo.

In the final minutes of action, the Leafs made a final surge to secure the win, draining 16 points to Davenport West’s 11.

Blake Croegaert was the leading scorer for the Leafs with 18 points, hitting three shots from beyond the arc, one field goal and seven free throws.

Andrew Denney added 10 points with one three pointer, three field goals and one free throw, while Jared Kuban scored on three shots from the field and one free throw. Jonathan Staab finished the game with four points on one field goal and went 2-for-2 from the line.

Others contributing to the win were Sam Hamer, Connor Johnson and Chase VanOpdorp, all with three points. Hamer scored on three free throws, Johnson hit a field goal and a free throw and VanOpdorp knocked down a trey. Tyler Fisher ended the game with one point on one free throw.

Geneseo vs. Rock Falls

A 19-point third quarter gave the Leafs the momentum to surge past the visiting Rock Falls Rockets Dec. 18, 55-45.

In a low scoring, defensive battle in the first quarter, Rock Falls held on to a 9-8 lead to open the game. However, the Leafs’ offense got going in the second quarter as the squad knocked down 14 points to the Rockets’ 12 for the one-point lead at the break, 22-21.

The Geneseo offense continued its hot streak in the third quarter, draining 19 points, while its defense was able to hold Rock Falls to only five the entire quarter. The Leafs extended their advantage to 41-26.

In the fourth quarter, Rock Falls attempted a comeback outscoring Geneseo 19-14, but it wasn’t enough as the Leafs were able to hang on and win the contest by 10.

Leading the way for the Leafs were Sam Hamer, Denney and Johnson all scoring in double digits. Hamer notched a team high 14 points as he hit five shots from the field and went 4-for-5 from the line. Denney followed with 13 points as he drained five field goals and one shot from beyond the arc. Johnson added 10 points with three field goals and four shots from the line.

Kuban finished the game with four points on two field goals, while Croegaert, Billy Hamer, Staab and Devan DePauw all contributed three points – Croegaert with three free throws, Hamer and Staab, a field goal and a free throw apiece and DePauw knocked down one shot from beyond the arc. VanOpdorp ended the game with two points on a field goal.

The Leafs (6-2 overall) will next face Washington at 8 p.m. Dec. 28 in the Pekin Holiday Tournament.
