The Geneseo tennis team  began postseason action this past week at the Moline Sectional, plus shut out Sterling Newman.

IHSA Sectionals

Geneseo’s Blake Croegaert and Daniel Rowley were the lone state qualifiers to advance out of the May 20-21 Moline Sectional.

Croegaert/Rowley earned a third-place finish in the sectional.

“The first day they were frustrated by  the style of play by Galesburg,” said head coach Kevin?Reed. “In their last set of the third-place match, Blake and Daniel  were communicating well and that was huge in that set.”

The duo won their first match, 6-1 and 6-4 over Ben Whittle/Chris Willis of Galesburg, followed by a 6-3 and 6-3 victory over Alex Knack/Dominick Baratta of Sterling Newman.

Croegaert/Rowley met up with No. 1 seed Tyler Buenting/Jed Wood of Moline in the next round and were defeated, 2-6 and 2-6.

In the third-place match, Croegaert/Rowley beat Pranav Puri/Richard Henning of Moline, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

Geneseo’s other doubles team of Alec Cheek/Connor Vandersnick won their opener, 6-1 and 6-1 over Mitch Hunter/Kyle Gollon of UTHS, but then fell to Puri/Henning of Moline, 3-6 and 3-6.

In the singles bracket, Max Hurliman won his first match over John Farrell of Alleman, 6-0 and 6-3, but lost his next match to Anthony Petrasko of Sterling Newman, 4-6 and 0-6.

Shawn?DePauw nabbed a win in his first match, 6-4 and 6-0 over Patrick Ginn of  Dixon, but was defeated in the next round by Eric White of Moline, 2-6 and 1-6.

Geneseo finished third as a team.

“I am definitely happy with getting a team down to state. It would be good to get more, but in our tough sectional it is hard to get players to state,” said Reed.

Geneseo vs. Sterling Newman

In their final regular season match of the year, the Leafs shut down visiting Sterling Newman, 5-0 May 18.

In singles action, DePauw defeated Anthony Petrasko, 6-4 and 6-2, while Hurliman beat John Hermes, 6-4, 3-6 (10-6).

In doubles play, Croegaert/Rowley earned a 6-1 and 6-2 win over Knack/Baratta, followed by  Cheek/Vandersnick with a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7) (10-3) win over Langenfeld/Neisewander. Doug Menozi/Colby Lang won their match over Miller/Ardis, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Croegaert and Rowley will compete at the IHSA State Tennis Finals this weekend May 27-28 in Arlington Heights.

“Being one of 120 players or teams at the state finals is an accomplishment right there,” said Reed. “I hope to see Blake and Daniel continue with their really good play because they have been playing really good tennis the last two weeks.”
