  • The Geneseo sophomore girls’ basketball team responded after a weekend loss to Rock?Island with a convincing conference victory over LaSalle-Peru.
    Geneseo vs. LaSalle-Peru
    In conference action Jan. 23, the sophomore Lady Leafs trounced visiting LaSalle-Peru, 62-20.
    Geneseo jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, 16-6, and after a 19-point second quarter the Lady Leafs posted a 35-10 advantage at the half. Geneseo’s defense held L-P to only four points in the second quarter.
    The Lady Leafs knocked down 12 more points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 49-15. In the fourth quarter, Geneseo posted 15 points to seal the victory. L-P was held to five points in both the third and fourth quarters.
    Jamie DeFauw led the Geneseo offense with 15 points as she knocked down five field goals and five free throws.
    Molly?DeBrock chipped in nine points as she hit a three pointer and three field goals, while Cortney Backes drained two shots from beyond the arc and a field goal for her eight points on the night.
    Anna Wise also chalked up eight points with three shots from the field and two free throws, while Rori Westerlund and Darci Dietrich added six points apiece, both with three field goals.
    Audrey Anderson finished the night with five points off two field goals and a free throw, while Kaylie Piekos scored four points on two field goals, and Bailey Conard added a free throw for her lone point of the night.
    Geneseo vs. Rock Island
    The Geneseo sophomore girls’ basketball team was defeated in non-conference action over the weekend by visiting Rock Island Jan. 21, 55-46.
    Rock Island took control of the game early 15-7 in the first quarter, but the Lady Leafs closed the gap at the half, 26-24. Geneseo outscored Rock Island, 17-11 in the second quarter.
    The Lady Rocks scored 10 points in the third quarter to the Lady Leafs’ seven for a 36-31 score in favor of Rock Island, and sealed the victory with 19 points in the fourth to Geneseo’s 15.
    DeBrock led the way for the Geneseo offense as she posted 11 points off three shots from the field and five free throws.
    Westerlund added eight points to the effort with four field goals, while DeFauw hit a field goal and a free throw for her seven points.
    Piekos and Wise each scored five points on two field goals and one free throw apiece, while Dietrich and Anderson each hit two field goals for their two four points apiece.
    Geneseo (17-5 overall and 5-0 in the NIB 12) will next host Kaneland at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 28.
