  • Bertha Ione Hedges, 94, of Geneseo, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 3, at Rux Funeral Home,?Galva. The Rev. Chris Ritter will officiate. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Bertha Hedges Memorial Fund.

    She was born on March 24, 1917, in DeLong, the daughter of Owen Evans and Mary Abigail (Hatch) Walker. She married Arthur Dale Hedges on Dec. 3, 1936, in Galesburg. He died on Sept. 28, 1984. She had worked in the cafeteria at LaFayette School, the Geneseo Restaurant, Hammond-Henry Hospital in the dietary department and at the LaFayette Telephone office. In her early years, she was affiliated with the LaFayette Methodist Church where she was associated with the Women Society of Christian Service. She was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church, Geneseo. She had been a 4-H leader and enjoyed gardening, doing needle crafts, crocheting, sewing and doing seamstress work. She had made a number of dresses for special occasions for family members with a sewing machine that she bought with chicken egg money.


    Survivors include a daughter and spouse, Mary Ann and Tom Conover of Tremont; a son, Richard and Alice Hedges of Geneseo; five grandchildren and spouses, Cary and Susan Conover, Karyl Conover, Kristine and Ron Anderson, Kathie and Josh Perez and Regan Hedges; and four great grandchildren, Abbygayle, Nathanael and Elizabeth Anderson and Jon Lu. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter in infancy, Connie; three sisters, Grace,?Elizabeth and Edna; and two brothers, Clarence and Floyd.
