The Geneseo boys’ track and field team earned 13 Top 5 finishes at the March 3 Sterling Gold Medal Meet, which included one first-place finish.

The Geneseo boys’ track and field team earned 13 Top 5 finishes at the March 3 Sterling Gold Medal Meet, which included one first-place finish.

“I am pleased,” said head coach Don?Fredericks. “I think we are off to a good start. I love our schedule, and our first two meets allow every athlete the opportunity to compete.”

Alex Platz claimed Geneseo’s lone first-place finish of the meet in the pole vault as he cleared 12-0, while Joe Huffman placed second for the Leafs in the shot put with a throw of 52-6.

In third place were Jay Wilson in the pole vault at 12-0, followed by Justin Seeley in the long jump with a mark of 19-8, and Josh Beard in the triple jump at 38-11 1/2. The 4x800-meter relay of Mitchell Lawson, Griffin Welfer, Mitchell Lamb and Jacob Rahn placed third in 9 minutes and 26.88 seconds.

“We had a lot of guys place, and so far it appears we will be strong in the throws, as well as hurdles,” said Fredericks. “The biggest surprise is our vaulters and that is a huge improvement from last year. We also had Justin Seeley have a huge performance in the long jump. Ryan Pitra had a personal best in the long jump, and Josh Beard improved to a lifetime best in the triple jump.”

Platz also placed fourth in the high jump with a final height of 5-8, followed by A.J. Marmion in the shot put at 42-11.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Ryan?Pitra in fifth in the long jump at 18-8; the 4x200-m relay of Seeley, Ryan?Webster, Sam Arndt and Jeremy Harper in 1;42.08; Welfer, 400-m dash, 57.11; Lawson, 1600-m run, 5:05.21; and the 4x400-m relay of Beard, Welfer, Webster and Seeley, 3:59.90.
