  • Tennis Leafs knock off Morris and Rocks

  • The Geneseo High School tennis team started the 2012 season with a 2-0 mark in dual play and finished the Rock Island Gold Invite with a 2-1 record.

  • The Geneseo High School tennis team started the 2012 season with a 2-0 mark in dual play and finished the Rock Island Gold Invite with a 2-1 record.
    Geneseo vs. Rock?Island
    The Leafs notched another home victory March 27, 4-1 over visiting Rock?Island.
    “We set up our schedule this way to get some victories under us,” said head coach Kevin?Reed. “Morris and Rock Island, unfortunately, are down this year, but it is always good to face teams where we can work on our skills and get some easy victories.”
    Geneseo swept doubles play with Shawn DePauw/Daniel Rowley winning the No. 1 match 6-0 and 6-0, followed by Alec Cheek/Max Hurliman also with a 6-0 and 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot. Bryce Gramling/Trevor Specht completed the sweep with a 6-0 and 6-0 victory over their No. 3 opponents.
    Connor Vandersnick emerged with a 6-2 and 6-3 win over his No. 1 singles opponent, while Doug Menozi suffered a 0-6, 6-2 and 3-6 loss at the No. 2 spot.
    Geneseo vs. Morris
    Geneseo shut down visiting Morris in the Leafs’ home opener March 26 with a 5-0 victory.
    “Any home match, I kind of get scared with playing in front of our home crowd because you never know how the guys will come out, but they came out and played really well against Morris,” said Reed. “The wind was a big challenge against Morris and Rock?Island.”
    Vandersnick started the night off with a 6-0 and 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles, followed by Hurliman with a 6-0 and 6-1 win at the No. 2 singles slot.
    DePauw/Rowley captured a 6-1 and 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles match, while  Cheek/Seth Stewart claimed a 6-1, 5-7 and 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Menozi/Specht closed out the night with a 6-2 and 6-1 win.
    The F/S team also earned a victory over Morris, 3-2.
    Receiving wins were Tyler Williams/Gramling, 10-4; Payton DeMay/Logan Lanphere, 10-4; and Henry Detlefs/Brian Bozzer, 10-0.
    Luke Verplaetse suffered a 7-10 loss at No. 1 singles, while Brice Piotrowski fell, 4-10 in singles play.
    Geneseo at RI?Gold Invite
    The Geneseo tennis team opened the season with a 2-1 record at the March 24 Rock Island Gold Invite.
    “I definitely felt in the first match with Rochelle that the guys were nervous, but after that match, we played really well against Sterling Newman,”?said Reed. “Sterling Newman is a really tough team, and I thought our preparation really helped us with that.”
    Geneseo swept Rochelle in the first match of the day, 5-0.
    DePauw, at No. 1 singles, defeated his opponent 6-1 and 6-3, while Vandersnick received a forfeit at No. 2 singles.
    Page 2 of 2 - In doubles play, Cheek/Rowley beat their No. 1 opponents, 6-2 and 6-0, while Menozi/Specht were victorious in No. 2 doubles, 6-1 and 6-1. The No. 3 doubles team of Stewart/Gramling came away with the 4-6, 6-4 and 6-1 win.
    In match two, the Leafs defeated Sterling Newman, 4-1.
    Geneseo’s doubles teams all received wins in their respective matches — Cheek/Rowley, 6-3, 6-7(5-7) (10-7) at No. 1; Menozi/Specht, 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 2 and Stewart/Gramling, 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 3.
    Vandersnick gave the Leafs their lone win in singles play at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-3, while DePauw suffered a 6-1, 4-6 (8-10) loss.
    In the final match of the day, the Moline junior varsity slid past Geneseo, 3-2.
    Earning wins for the Leafs were DePauw/Cheek at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-7 (6-8) (10-7) and Rowley/Vandersnick, 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
    Gramling lost his No. 1 singles match by a score of 0-6 and 1-6, while Stewart fell, 0-6 and 0-6 at No. 2 singles. Menozi/Specht suffered a 2-6 and 1-6 loss in the No. 3 doubles match.
    “We are seeing in matches what we have seen in practice, and I was pleased with how the guys were still able to work  together even though we were switching guys around,” said Reed.
    The Leafs will be in action next on the road at 4:30 p.m. April 3 against LaSalle-Peru, followed by a 4:30 p.m. April 4 road match with UT.
