  • The Geneseo sophomore baseball team improved to 10-1 on the season this past week with wins over Sherrard, Rock Island and Orion.
    Geneseo vs. Sherrard
    Nine runs on eight hits proved to be all the sophomore Leafs would need April 2 as they shutout visiting Sherrard, 9-0.
    Geneseo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held onto that advantage through the next two innings.
    The Leafs drove in three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, followed by another three in the bottom of the fifth to take the 8-0 lead.
    Geneseo sealed the victory in the bottom of the sixth with one run and held Sherrard scoreless in the seventh.
    Nevada Nilsson recorded the win on the mound for the Leafs. He threw four innings where he allowed one hit, no runs and struck out seven.
    Reed Buysse threw two innings for the Leafs where he shutdown the Sherrard offense and struck out four, while Alex Craig pitched one inning and allowed three hits and no runs.
    Adam Stenzel (2 RBIs) and Alex Craig (3 RBIs) led the way for the Leafs at the plate with two hits apiece, which included a double by Stenzel.
    Mike Murray (1 RBI), Jeremy May, Blake Carmichael (1 RBI) and Trevor Craig, all knocked out one hit for the game.
    Geneseo vs. Rock?Island
    The sophomores Leafs slid past Rock Island on the road March 29 by a score of 5-2.
    After a scoreless first inning, Geneseo plated the first run of the game in the top of the second, but Rock Island countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 2-1 lead.
    The game remained in favor of the Rocks until the Leafs tied the game up, 2-2 with one run in the top of the fifth.
    Geneseo stole the victory in the top of the seventh as the squad drove home three runs and held Rock Island scoreless in the bottom of the frame.
    Buysse recorded the win on the mound for Geneseo. He pitched six innings and allowed four hits, two hits and struck out one. Nilsson earned the save in one inning of work and allowed one hit, no runs and struck out two.
    Joe Thomas (1 RBI), Alex Craig (1 RBI) and May (2 RBIs) led the offensive effort with two hits apiece, which included doubles from Alex Craig and May.
    ?Buysse, Murray, Zak?White and Trevor Craig finished the game with one hit apiece with a double from Trevor Craig.
    Geneseo vs. Orion
    In non-conference action March 28, the Leafs dominated host Orion, 18-4.
    Geneseo put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the first, but Orion countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 2-1 lead.
    Page 2 of 2 - The Leafs came back in the top of the second and plated one run to tie the game, 2-2. Geneseo gained control of the lead in the top of the third as the squad scored another run for the 3-2 advantage.
    Geneseo pushed four more runs across the plate in the top of the fourth, while Orion drove in two for a 7-4 Leaf lead.
    The Leafs padded their lead in the top of the fifth with five runs to make it a 12-4 ball game. Geneseo closed out the game in the sixth inning with six runs to seal the victory.
    Thomas pitched the win for the Leafs in four innings of work. He allowed four hits, four runs and struck out four. Drew Himmelman threw two innings for Geneseo and allowed one hit and no runs.
    Buysse (4 RBIs) led the way for Geneseo at the plate with three hits, including a triple.
    Murray (2 RBIs), White (1 RBI), Alex Craig, Blake Carmichael (1 RBI) and Lucas Knepp all finished the game with one hit with a triple from Murray and a double from Craig. Nilsson and May contributed one RBI apiece.
    The Leafs (10-1 overall) will host Rochelle next in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. April 7 at Bollen Field.
