  • There is a possibility the vacant property site at the south edge of Atkinson could have a new business.
At the April 2 meeting, Atkinson trustees learned officials with Pilot gas company has indicated an interest in purchasing the property, which is the location of the Atkinson Plaza that included gas station and restaurant, but has been vacant for nearly three years.
According to trustee Mike Vergane, Pilot expressed an interest in the property with plans to raze all present structures and build new.  He also indicated the approximate 14 acres would be paved with a goal of having enough space to park 150 semi trucks.
The property is currently owned by the Puthusseril family from the Chicago area.
Mayor August Junior said sale of the property would “definitely benefit the village.”
“Besides the fact that we need diesel fuel available in Atkinson, we also benefit from the sales tax revenue and property upgrades that would bring more property tax for the village.  It also would obviously update the eyesore that is right at the entrance to our community,” said Junior.
    In other business, the board:
    • Heard a review of services included in their membership with Bi-State Regional Commission, Rock Island, as presented by Mark Hunt.
    • Reviewed the tentative 2012-13 budget, but did not disclose figures.
