At the UT Boys’ Kiwanis Invitational April 7, the Leaf track and field team cracked the Top 5 in 20 events of the ABC Meet. As a team, Geneseo placed seventh overall.
“It was a monster, high-powered and extremely competitive invitational,” said head coach Don Fredericks. “We ended up seventh out of 12 teams, and I am happy with that. We had good efforts across the board.”
Nick Verbeck helped lead the Geneseo contingent with a pair of first-place finishes in shot put and discus. He won the shot put C with a throw of 43-9 1/4 and the discus C with a mark of 123-1.
A.J. Marmion placed second in shot put B with a toss of 47 3/4 and first in discus B with a mark of 135-7, while Joe Huffman nabbed first in shot put A at 52-4 and third in discus A at 133-10.
“Our throwers led the team making up 43 of our points, which was phenomenal,” said Fredericks. “Our pole vaulters also did a good job and has still been the biggest surprise this season.”
The pole vaulters went 1-2-3 for Leafs with Jay Wilson winning the pole vault B as he clearing 11-0, while Jesse Mohr took second in pole vault C at 10-0 and Alex Platz, third in pole vault A at 12-0.
Zach Taber placed fourth in long jump C at 18-5, while Ian Ramsey came in fourth in high jump C at 5-4.
Geneseo went 1-2-3 in the 3200-m run with Mitchell Lawson taking the tape in first C race with a time of 10:40.60, followed by Kyle Reiling in the B race in second at 10:21.04 and Jordan Starkey, third in the A race with a time of 9:57.66.
Justin Seeley brought home fourth in 110-m hurdles C in 18.36, while Cam Yeater took fifth in 110-m hurdles with a time of 17.46.
The 4x400-m F/S sprint relay of Ryan?Pitra, Sam Arndt, Ryan Ganson and Chenoweth claimed third in 4:01.31, while Reiling took second in the 1600-m run B race with a time of 4:37.67.
Yeater nabbed third in the 300-m hurdles C race at 43.97, while Mielke took fourth in the B race at 44.67.

“We are, hopefully, putting the pieces of the puzzle together, but we still have some stuff to work on,” said Fredericks. “We are making progress. We are definitely a stronger team than we were last year. We have a lot of potential and talent.”
