The “Faithful Feet” run/walk began in 2010 and was renamed last year to “Drew’s Faithful Feet,” in memory of Drew Schaaf.
The race, sponsored by the Faith, Fellowship and Service Group (FAM) at St. Malachy’s Church, Geneseo, will be Saturday, May 12, with all proceeds donated in Drew Schaaf’s name to area women and children in need.
Dan and Devon Schaaf are in the process of establishing a foundation in their son’s memory to help provide Angelcare baby monitors, which set off an alarm when an infant stops breathing and to provide memory cards to help educate parents and caregivers of the dangers of sleeping with an infant.
Just one week after the 2010 race, tragedy struck the Schaaf couple when their infant son, Drew, died.
“Our beloved baby Drew tragically passed away in his daddy’s arms the morning of July 11, 2010,” Devon said. “Dan was helping me out on a night shift with Drew and had taken him into our living room, sat down with him on the couch and accidentally fell asleep. In the middle of the night, Drew shifted and suffocated.
We want others to know the danger of falling asleep with an infant. Our mission from ‘Drew’s Faithful Feet’ is to create an awareness of the dangers of sleeping with an infant,” she said.
Just weeks before the 2011 race, the Schaaf couple faced tragedy a second time when one of their twins, Owen, was stillborn. Owen’s twin, Reese, is now 1.
The first race on July 3, 2010, was Drew’s first outing and Devon said, “Drew was the center of attention. He was just days old and many people, adults and kids, came to peek at him tucked away in my body swing.”
Mike McCoy, a race committee member, said, “Shocked and saddened by Drew’s passing, but moved by the profound impact his brief life had on all of our lives, the race committee resolved to convert the ‘Faithful Feet’ 5K into ‘Drew’s Faithful Feet,’ with proceeds donated in Drew Schaaf’s name to the Life and Family Educational Trust. We did this with the hope that the race would become a celebration of life — a way of keeping Drew’s memory alive, but also using his life to support and benefit other children in need.”
Drew’s footprints are the symbol of the event and are imprinted on the race T-shirts and race bags.
Last year, the event brought out more than 500 participants and Devon said, “We hope to surpass that number this year.”
The event includes a 5K run starting at 8:30 a.m., one-half mile kids’ run, and a 200 yard kids’ dash. Awards will be presented and winners of each age group will receive a free three-month pass to Snap Fitness in Geneseo.

Refreshments will be available for race participants.
The 2010 run/walk was the first charity outreach of FAM, which was organized in 2009 as a way for young adult parishioners at St. Malachy’s to become acquainted and support each other in their faith journey.
