  • The Geneseo boys’ tennis team captured two wins on the courts this past week with wins over Sterling and Rochelle.
    Geneseo vs. Rochelle
The Geneseo boys’ tennis team notched a 5-0 victory on the road April 24 over Rochelle.
“Yes, we took care of Rochelle pretty handily,” said head coach Kevin Reed. “We had a little different lineup and got the easy victory. We played well last night. I think this was one of the better times I have seen them play.”
Shawn?DePauw and Connor Vandersnick grabbed wins in singles play — DePauw, 6-1 and 6-2 and Vandersnick, 6-0 and 6-1.
Alec Cheek/Daniel Rowley earned a 6-1 and 6-0 victory in No. 1 doubles, followed by Doug Menozi/Trevor Specht with a 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 2. Seth Stewart/Bryce Gramling were victorious in the No. 3 spot by a score of 6-4 and 6-4.
The freshmen/sophomore Leafs received wins from Payton Demay/Henry Dethlefs, 10-5, Tyler Williams, 10-1 and Brock Piotrowski/Brian Bozzer, 10-5. Luke Verplaetse lost 5-10 and Logan Lanphere/Brice Piotrowski fell 7-10.
    Geneseo vs. Sterling
In conference action April 19, the Geneseo boys’ tennis team defeated visiting Sterling by a score of 4-1.
“I think it was a good overall team effort, and I was real proud of our No. 1 doubles’ team that beat Sterling’s No. 1,” said Reed. “Sterling is a little down this year, but have three or four good players.”
The Leafs’ doubles teams swept the Golden Warriors with wins from Cheek/Rowley, 6-4 and 7-5 in the No. 1 spot; DePauw/Gramling, 6-2 and 6-4 and Menozi/Specht, 6-4 and 6-1.
“Doug and Trevor are basically our wildcard and a lot of the times the matches will come down to one match, which is typically the No. 3 doubles’ match,”?said Reed. “They are doing a nice job of working on their game, and I want them to finish out their senior year strong.”
Max Hurliman nabbed a win at No. 2 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. Vandersnick suffered a 3-6 and 1-6 loss in the No. 1 singles’ match.
The freshmen/sophomore squad edged Sterling, 3-2 with wins from Williams/ Dethlefs, 10-6; Lanphere/ Demay, 10-2; and Brock Piotrowski/Bozzer, 10-10 (7-4). Verplaetse lost his No. 1 singles’ match, 1-10, while Brice Piotrowski fell 2-10.
The Leafs will next host Dixon at 4:30 p.m. May 1 at Richmond Hill.
