  • The Geneseo girls’ soccer team closed out regular season play with a shut out victory of Ottawa and carried that over to a regional play as the squad shut down Sterling.
    Geneseo vs. Sterling
In their first postseason test, the Lady Leafs dominated Sterling, 7-0, May 15 as the team scored all seven of its goals in the first half of action.
“At this point in the season, the girls are playing pretty well together, getting chances and finishing, which is key,” said head coach Ian Kline. “You don’t want to waste any chances and that was nice to see last night.”
Brittany Mielke opened the scoring with an unassisted goal less than 1 minute into action at :58.
Rachel Morton knocked an unassisted goal past the Sterling goalie at 3:22, followed by Alex Radue with an unassisted goal at 5:23 for the 3-0 lead.
“Our girls are strong and Sterling is not quite as strong of a program,” said Kline. “We dominated the field. The girls knew what they needed to do and got it done.”
Jade Mariman punched in a goal at 7:02 on the assist from Kylie Gerhardt, followed by Radue’s second goal of the contest on the assist from Kelsey Nystrom at 20:43 to go up 5-0.
Hannah Pace added a goal at 21:54 on the assist from Mariman, while Heather Setser knocked in the team’s seventh goal of the contest on the assist from Mallory Wirth at 28:06.
“The games will get more challenging with a higher intensity so we need to be on top  of our game,” said Kline. “The girls came ready to play, got the job done and moved on.”
Geneseo finished the game with 18 shots on goal and had no goalie saves. Sterling was held without a shot on goal and made nine saves.
In the other regional match up, UT defeated Dixon, 3-0.
    Geneseo vs. Ottawa
The Lady Leafs closed out conference play May 10 in fine fashion with a 7-0 shut out Ottawa in Geneseo, which gives the girls a share of the NIB 12 title with Sycamore.
“Ottawa came out a little stronger than they have in the past and worked really hard,” said Kline. “They gave us a good game to prepare for the postseason. They challenged us on all aspects of the field.”
Morton punched in the first goal of the game a the 4:00 mark and was followed by an unassisted goal by Setser at the 6:00 mark to put Geneseo up 2-0.
Pace knocked through at goal at 16:00 on the assist from Nystrom, while Mariman scored at 31:00 on the assist from Nystrom. Nystrom added her own goal just before the half on the assist from Radue at 35:00 for the 5-0 lead at halftime.
Page 2 of 2 - Morton kicked off the second half with a goal on the assist from Wirth at 48:00, and then Wirth capped off the game with a goal of her own on the assist from Radue at 50:00.
