Geneseo’s Connor Vandersnick, Daniel Rowley and Shawn DePauw are headed to the IHSA State Tennis Finals with fourth-place finishes at the Rock?Island Sectional May 18-19. The team earned second-place honors.
“It is always our goal to try to get somebody to state,” said head coach Kevin Reed. “This is a very tough sectional and getting three to state is great. It is even better that we got second at the sectional because it is the first time in our tennis history to get second.”
Vandersnick?placed fourth in singles’ play as he went 2-2 for the weekend. He won his first two matches, 6-0 and 6-0 and 6-1 and 6-2. Vandersnick suffered his first loss of the tournament in the fourth round, 1-6 and 2-6. In the third-place match, Vandersnick fell, 6-4, 4-6 and 1-6 to John Hermes of Sterling Newman to place fourth.
“Connor got a great draw and seed,” said Reed.?“After he won his first two matches he knew he was going to state, but then ran into the No. 1 seed from Moline and lost. In the third-place match, he played Hermes from Sterling Newman who he has faced before and lost to in three sets and the same thing happened again.
“I think him playing singles all season and playing against good players all season is what helped him this weekend. He played smart tennis.”
Rowley/DePauw took fourth in doubles’ play, winning their first two matches, 6-3 and 6-2 and 6-0 and 6-0. The duo lost their first match, 5-7 and 2-6 in round four. In the third-place match, Rowley/DePauw fell 1-6 and 2-6 to Alleman’s Austin Schoeck/Mark McLaughlin to take fourth.
“Daniel and Shawn didn’t see a seeded team to go to state and had it easy on Friday,” said Reed. “On Saturday, it got a heck of a lot harder with Moline and Alleman.
“We were a little concerned with them not having played together much this season and on Saturday we saw a little struggle, but overall they are good tennis players and mesh well together,” said Reed.
Alec Cheek won his first round over his Galesburg opponent, 6-1 and 6-2, but later lost 3-6 and 3-6 to his opponent from Sterling Newman.
Jacob?Stimes/Bryce Gramling lost their first match in doubles’ play to Moline, 0-6 and 0-6.
Vandersnick, Rowley and DePauw will compete at the IHSA State Finals this weekend May 24-26 at District 211, 214 and 220 courts in Arlington Heights.
