St. Malachy’s students started their 2012-13 school year with new playground equipment.
Immediately following a welcome back assembly on Aug. 15, St. Malachy’s sixth graders joined school principal Stan Griffin in cutting a ribbon to officially open the playground.
A committee was formed to investigate the possibility of replacing old playground equipment at the school, said Griffin.
A fund-drive, spearheaded by the school’s Parents’ Club and the group’s annual Car Party, raised money for the new equipment.
Parents and volunteers helped install the pieces when they arrived.
“We had so many volunteers help out. Too many to even list,”?said Griffin.
Although some pieces are original to the playground, like the swing set, most of the pieces are new.
Even though the equipment was installed prior to the start of the school year, Griffin said students took the opportunity this summer to test out the new playground.
“As soon as it was safe to do so, they were on the equipment,”?he said.
