A Veteran’s Appreciation Day will be Sept. 1 in the Geneseo City Park. The event will be hosted by members of the Don Cherry Auxiliary and VFW Post No. 5083.
“We would like to invite everyone to the park for this event. We want to honor all who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan,” said auxiliary president Rhonda Borkgren.
Veterans are asked to meet at the city park band shelter at 12:30 p.m. where they will be introduced and recognized.
“If you have a spouse or a son or daughter who is not able to attend because of where they are stationed, we would be happy for you to take their place,” she said.
A pork chop meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The meal is free for veterans or active duty military members. No ID is required. Meals will be available to the public for a fee.
A special program honoring veterans will start at 1 p.m. Kindergarten students who would like to help lead the Pledge of Allegiance are asked to meet at the band shelter at 12:45 p.m.
“Show your patriotism and wear your red, white and blue,” said Borkgren. “We need to show our respect and let (veterans) know we appreciate all they have given up and done for us to enjoy our freedom every day of the year.”
Free small American flags will be distributed to those attending.
