  • Ina L. Asplund, 96, of Geneseo, died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo, surrounded by her family. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. The Rev. Lou Zuck will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Vandemore Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church.
    She was born on June 14, 1916, in Cleveland, Ill., when the Rock River was out of its banks. Ina was the daughter of Fred and Lillian (Johnson) Gotthardt. She graduated from Geneseo Township High School in 1934. She married John E. Asplund on Oct. 6, 1942, in Geneseo. He died on May 11, 1978. She worked for several years at the J.D.
    Darnall Senior High School cafeteria and served as a nurse’s aide for 19 years at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. She also babysat for her grandchildren for many years. She truly loved her children, grandchildren and
    great grandchildren and they adored her. Family gatherings and holidays always were special events. She has been a life-long member of Grace Church in Geneseo where she celebrated her baptism, confirmation and marriage.
    Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Roy and Sylvia Asplund of Woodstock; daughters and sons-in-law, Ione and Larry Hesch of Taylor Ridge, Mary and Jeff Orton of Geneseo and Joy and John Dwyer of Geneseo; nine grandchildren, Kathleen (Peter) Hanke, Dr. Michele (Jeff) Newquist, Wendy (Todd) Custable, Amy (Karlin) Schelker, Adam Orton, Rachel Orton, Lisa (Steven) Depies, Ross (Dana) Dwyer and Todd (Megan) Dwyer; two step grandchildren, Roxanne Rafraf and Tanya Rafraf; nine great grandchildren, Michael and Nicole Hanke; Carolyn, Emily and Connor Newquist; Landon, Logan and Reid Schelker; and Riley Dwyer; a brother-in-law, Stanley Speller; a niece, Judy Scott; and two nephews, Alan Webb and Tim Speller. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; three sisters, Bernice Webb, Ione Gotthardt and Lorna Speller; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Asplund.
