Dorothy M. Madden, 92, formerly of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo. Graveside funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 31, at Rock Island National Cemetery. The Rev. Bruce Bergthold officiated. A visitation was held Thursday, Aug. 30, at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Geneseo. Memorials may be directed to Living Lands and Waters.
She was born on June 11, 1920, in Beardstown, the daughter of Oscar and Alma (Merritt) Vail. She married Robert K. Madden on June 21, 1944. He died in 1993. She worked for the W.B. Read Company in Bloomington for three years as a secretary. In the summer of 1941, she took the Civil Service Exam and reported to the War Production Board in Washington, D.C. where she served as a legal secretary from January 1942 to November 1946. Locally, she worked as a secretary for 10 years at 1st National Bank of Rock Island in the trust department. Later, she worked part-time in local law offices. She was a member of the Fifteenth Avenue Christian Church in Rock Island. She loved oil and water color painting, enjoyed the Mississippi River and spending time on it, as well as, playing the keyboard.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jill Madden of Geneseo; a granddaughter and spouse, Jennifer and Justin Roos of DeLand; a great granddaughter, Addison Roos; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jacque Vail of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Clifford Vail.
