  • Gerald Dean "Jerry" Vermost, 72, of Oquawka, formerly of Geneseo and Rock Island, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Great River Hospice, Burlington, Iowa, after a 20-year battle with cancer. A private family funeral service was held Sept. 8 in the chapel of Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Geneseo. Deacon Harley Chaffee officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Memorials may be left to the University of Iowa Cancer Center.
    He was born on Jan. 6, 1940, in Geneseo, the son of Don and Frances (Wirth) Vermost. He retired from Swords Veneer and Lumber Co. in Rock Island where he was the Human Relations/Safety Director. During his working career, he was very active in the Teamsters as a steward, secretary, treasurer and business representative. After his retirement, he relocated to Oquawka where he enjoyed his horses and the rural community.
    Survivors include one son and spouse, Terry and Nancy Vermost of Bentonville, Ark.; three daughters and spouse, Tonya Wilson of Kissimmee, Fla., Toni Morey of Kissimmee and Tracy and Chris Freeman of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; one brother and spouse, Ron and Joyce Vermost of Aiken, S.C.; two sisters, Beverly VanVooren of Moline and Rosemary Vermost of Coal Valley; and his special friend, Karen. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna Smeaton.
