The Geneseo varsity volleyball team went 1-1 in conference play this past week and also fell in a non-conference showdown.
Geneseo vs. LaSalle-Peru
Host LaSalle-Peru was too much for the Lady Leafs to handle Sept. 18 as the Cavaliers defeated Geneseo in two games, 25-17 and 25-17.
"Definitely things could have gone better," said head coach Joni Nelson. "We did really well against Rock Island the night before so it was disappointing for us not to play our best (against L-P). We had a couple things that didn't go our way and it seemed like we couldn't get that momentum on our side."
Leading the offensive effort were Kelcey Adams with five kills and Jamie DeFauw and Jordan DePauw who each put away four kills.
Kylie Gerhardt served up four points to lead the team, while Andrea Beck had three and Courtney Cutlip, two. Gerhardt also chipped in 10 assists and Adams had five.
"I think we can definitely match up with them, but we have some work to do," said Nelson. "Teams that run a quick offense we need to be quick on defense and also make our offense faster."
Heather Setser led the team with 17 digs, followed by Adams and Cutlip with seven apiece, while Gerhardt, DePauw and DeFauw, all came up with two blocks.
Geneseo vs. Rock Island
On the road Sept. 17, the Lady Leafs suffered a 25-17 and 25-18 loss to Rock Island.
"(Against Rock Island) a lot of the girls stepped up, and I think we surprised ourselves," said Nelson. "I was happy with how they played. Rock Island is a tough team and we played up with Rock Island. We played our best and that is all I can ask for. We had a few errors here and there, but if we can play that way against everybody that is a good sign."
Leading the effort were Cutlip with six kills, followed by DeFauw putting away five kills and Gerhardt with four.
Gerhardt served up four points with one ace, while Cutlip had an ace. Adams finished the night with nine assists, while Gerhardt had eight.
Shaina Lohman and DePauw each came up with two blocks, followed by DeFauw and Adams with one apiece.
Gerhardt led the team in digs with nine, while Beck had seven and Setser, six.
Geneseo vs. Streator
In conference action Sept. 13, the Geneseo varsity volleyball team defeated visiting Streator, 25-22 and 25-19.
"A win is a win, but I would have liked to have done it more handily," said Nelson. "When you play teams you sometimes want to play to their level, but we won so I can't be too disappointed."
Page 2 of 2 - DePauw led the team at the net defensively with five blocks, followed by DeFauw and Adams with three apiece.
"The girls are definitely coming along," said Nelson. "I have some really smart girls and they know where they lack and they are working on it. We just need to put it all together and get everything on the same page."
Mallory Wirth put away seven kills for the Lady Leafs to lead the team, while DeFauw added five kills and Adams, four.
Adams finished the game with 16 assists and Gerhardt had five. Setser served three points and Adams added one ace.
Cutlip came up with seven digs, followed by Gerhardt with six and Wirth had five.
The Lady Leafs (6-5 overall) will be on the road next when they travel to Sterling at 5 p.m. Sept. 25.
