  • Hillcrest Home in rural Geneseo will host an open house from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 to showcase their newly renovated areas.
Nursing home tours will be given and will include visits to the renovated resident dining areas on the east and west sides, the main entrance, the social service and dietary office, the family room and the dietary delivery area.
"The renovation has given us much more seating room in the main dining area and allows all residents to eat in the main dining room and to take advantage of the buffet dining that is offered," said Hillcrest Home administrator Mary Bergren. "The extra seating room also makes it more comfortable for family members and visitors who want to join residents at mealtime."
Bergren said a new family room provides a private area where residents can sit and enjoy a meal with family or visitors.
"This room also can be reserved for resident birthday parties and other family events," she noted.
A new drive-thru overhead canopy at the main entrance provides protection for residents and families as they arrive or leave during inclement weather.
"It also is greatly appreciated by the activity staff when they take residents out for outings in the community and country rides," she said.
"The automatic front doors help residents to be more independent as they enter and leave the facility, and staff and families pushing wheelchairs through the entryway have a much easier time, also," said Bergren.
Hillcrest Home's delivery area, mechanical room and walk-in freezer now are enclosed and are located at the rear of the kitchen area.
Renovation work started in the fall of 2011. Kenyon and Associates of Peoria served as architects for the project with Hillebrand Construction of Davenport, Iowa, serving as the general contractors.
An outdoor cafe area where residents can sit to eat outside, weather permitting, still needs to be completed.
"Though Hillcrest Home is owned and operated by Henry County, taxpayer dollars were not used for the construction," said Bergren. "Many years of planning and saving has allowed us to provide a beautiful ara for our residents to use and enjoy."
A ribbon cutting will be at 2 p.m. and refreshments will be offered during Oct. 20 open house.
