The congregation at Church of Christ recently completed a major remodeling project at the church and they want to share their "new look" with area residents.
The Oct. 20th event also marks the 40th anniversary of the church. Activities for all ages will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., "rain or shine." The church is located at the northwest edge of Geneseo, 13681 North 2150th Ave.
In addition to a bounce house and a variety of games, homemade chicken noodle soup, chili, desserts and beverages will be served at no cost.
The Rev. Ollie Adams, church pastor, said the open house "is to show our new look."
About 40 members joined Rev. Adams in working together to update almost the entire building. Most of the work was done by volunteers with the exception of having the carpet professionally installed.
"We have new paint from top to bottom," Adams said. "We put in new carpet and we refinished and reupholstered our pews in the auditorium."
Classrooms, nursery and office space also have a new look with new paint, new carpeting and new furniture.
Work began in February and the project was complete in late September, Adams said.
"The church was in disrepair and it is my hope to energize our membership by renovating the church building and by doing this to reenergize the church spiritually," he said, adding that there already has been an increase in attendance and in Bible study participation
"We are a small membership of about 40 and it is my hope to increase our attendance," Adams said. "Our message at Church of Christ is a simplistic message that stresses a relationship with God and not merely tradition."
In the 40-year history of the church, Rev. Adams said he did not think the church had ever been updated, only minor repairs made. "It was time," he said.
And best of all, the church membership paid for their renovation as they worked and incurred no lasting debt from their "new look."
Adams has been pastor at Church of Christ for the last four years.
Worship services are at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays with Sunday school for all ages at 9:30 a.m. Bible study for all ages is at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, and Adams also offers off-site Bible studies in homes for anyone in the community, he said. "I also will e-mail my sermons to anyone in the community who wants to receive them."
