  • The Geneseo varsity volleyball team got back to its winning ways this past week as the Lady Leafs grabbed two conference wins over Streator and Ottawa.
    Geneseo vs. Streator
Geneseo captured a conference win on the road Oct. 9 with a 25-19 and 25-20 victory over Streator.
"Last night was really exciting because everyone contributed," said head coach Joni Nelson. "We tried a couple different lineups and were still able to take Streator in two. That was a very positive thing to show we can use multiple girls and still get the job done."
Leading the team at the net were Kelcey Adams, Jamie DeFauw and Mallory Wirth, all putting away five kills, followed by DeFauw coming up with four blocks and Wirth, two.
Kylie Gerhardt added 11 assists for the match, while Adams had eight.
Gerhardt also led the team with 12 points and six assists, followed by Courtney Cutlip with five points and two aces; and Wirth, three points with one ace.
Heather Setser chipped in 14 digs for the night, followed by Adams with seven and Gerhardt and Cutlip, six apiece.
"Last night we did a lot better, came out and played our game," said Nelson. "We were the better team last night."
    Geneseo vs. Ottawa
The Lady Leafs notched a much-needed conference win Oct. 4 over Ottawa, 25-21 and 25-17 to move to 4-2 in the conference.
"Ottawa was a big game for us," said Nelson. "Ottawa is always a really good team in the conference and to beat them the second time in two games I was really proud of the girls. Things finally came together."
DeFauw, Gerhardt and Adams led the charge at the net for the offense as all three put away five kills.
Gerhardt also chipped in 14 assists, while Adams had 12.
From the service line, Gerhardt added nine points with four aces, followed by Setser had six points with one ace; Adams, five points with two aces and Jordan DePauw and Heather Hickenbottom, one ace apiece.
Defensively, Adams came up with 15 digs, while Wirth and Setser each dug up 12. DePauw ended the night with two blocks, while Cutlip and DeFauw each had one.
Geneseo (9-13 overall and 5-2 in the NIB 12) will be on the road next at 5 p.m. Oct. 16 against Dixon.
"We've seen all the teams before, and we want to end on a good note in the conference," said Nelson.
The Lady Leafs will see Dunlap in the first round of regionals in Geneseo at 7 p.m. Oct. 23.
"We saw Dunlap at the Moline Tournament, but we were not the same team as we are now," said Nelson. "We know what we need to do and change. I think we will be a little more ready."
