  • Geneseo's Michelle Legatzke punched her ticket to the state tennis finals after she placed third at the Moline Sectional Oct. 12 and 13.
"It was a good feeling and she played really well," said head coach Dan Putman. "She got drawn with the girl who beat her last year to go to state, and Michelle just turned her game up. She played the best tennis I have seen her play ever. It was just a matter of being on."
Legatzke, a junior, defeated her singles' opponent from Sterling, 6-2 and 6-2 in the third-place match to earn her spot.
Earlier in the day, Legatzke won her second-round match, 6-2 and 6-0; third round, 6-1 and 6-1; and lost her fourth round match, 0-6 and 0-6.
In other sectional action, Kirsten Backes fell in her first round match, 6-3 and 6-2, while Clare Possin/Anna Madigan won their first round match, 7-6 (9-7) and 6-3, but lost in round two, 6-1 and 6-2. Bailey Conard/Cheyenne VanQuakebeke had a round one bye, but then lost in round two, 6-1 and 6-1.
"Kirsten played really well, and my No. 1 doubles team of Clare and Anna played the best tennis I have seen all year," said Putman.
"I think it was a successful season. We were rebuilding, but we see what the future will be next year because we had a lot of juniors come up and compete for us."
Legatzke will compete at the IHSA Tennis State Finals Oct. 18-20 in Buffalo Grove.
"Being her junior year and her first trip to state, I want her to see the level of competition and hopefully that will make her hungry for next year," said Putman. "For Michelle, it is good because she likes the big hitters and she will have some really good matches. It is a chance to see how other players play as a learning experience."
