  • The Geneseo boys' and girls' cross country teams both earned a spot at the sectional meet after the girls placed second and the boys fourth at the Oct. 22 Galesburg Regional.
"I think our teams ran well," said head coach Don Fredericks. "We had some kids not feeling 100 percent racing Saturday, but if we had to pick an IHSA race where we were not 100 percent, it is regionals. We need to be clicking on all cylinders for our teams to have a chance to qualify at sectionals."
Leading the way for the girls were Emily Ford and Halle Olson as both girls placed in the Top 10. Ford crossed the finish line in 20 minutes and 6 seconds for fifth place to earn All-Regional honors, while Olson placed seventh in 20:25.
Lauren Coulter raced to a 14th-place finish in 20:52, followed by Maggie Schlindwein in 21:15 for 19th.
Taylor Claus took 24th overall in 21:32, while Katie Puls came in 27th at 21:44 and Morgan Kelly, 32nd, 21:59.
"Our regional is really hard, and there were several All-Staters in both fields," said Fredericks. "All-and-all, I was really happy with the overall efforts."
On the boys' side, Jordan Starkey paced the Leaf runners in fifth place at 16:34 to earn All-Regional honors.
Mitchell Lawson placed 16th in 17:08, while David Chenoweth came in 22nd at 17:31; and Tony Gatter took 26th at 17:47.
Nick Fox chipped in a 28th-place finish in 17:50, followed by Mitchell Lamb in 30th at 17:54 and Chaise Blakley, 33rd in 17:58.
"Our teams are hungry," said Fredericks. "Is it realistic to qualify for state? It is, but the girls are in a better position. I love the girls' chances. Both teams are ranked eighth in the sectional. I would not bet against our girls because they are coming on like crazy.
"The boys' odds are a little longer, but every year there always are some surprises, and it is our goal to be one of those surprises."
Both teams will races this weekend at the Peoria Notre Dame Sectional with the girls at 10 a.m. and the boys' race at 10:45 a.m.
"There are five sectionals and two are ridiculously loaded, and we are in one of them," said Fredericks. "It is a tough assignment.
"I want to see (our team) race with passion and purpose, and when the race is concluded I want to see them proud of the efforts they put forth. We can only control what we do and we have to run intelligent races."
