  • Trying to keep their season alive the Green Machine rolled into Sandwich Oct. 27 and knocked off the Indians, 17-0 to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
“I am real happy with the team,” said head coach Larry Johnsen. “This was our first road win, and it came at a great time.”
Again, it was Geneseo’s defense that helped pace the Green Machine as they held off the Sandwich offense and forced some early turnovers.
“For the last three weeks, our defense has really played well,” said Johnsen. “We are playing with a lot of confidence. When the game started, Sandwich got going, but we got the turnover to switch the momentum.”
The first came in the first series of the game when Sandwich marched down the field, but fumbled. The fumble was recovered by Geneseo to end the drive.
The next turnover Geneseo converted into a 29-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Grant Burress in the first quarter to put Geneseo on the board, 7-0. Kevin Wolak added the PAT kick.
Mitch Miller put the Green Machine up by two scores just before the half as he plunged into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown on fourth and one. Wolak knocked through the PAT kick for the 14-0 advantage at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Geneseo put three more points on the board as Wolak split the uprights on a 26-yard field goal for the 17-0 lead.
Geneseo controlled the ball for 30 minutes of the 48-minute game Saturday.
“The defense did really well and the offense ate up a lot of clock,” said Johnsen. “We still have things to fix and are striving for perfection.”
Geneseo combined for 186 total yards of offense with 178 on the ground and eight through the air.
Rayce Singbush led the team with 49 yards on 16 carries, followed by Luke Snyder with 41 yards on 11 touches.
Miller added 27 yards on eight carries, while Ryan Webster had nine carries for 27 yards. Burress finished with eight carries for 25 yards and Brandon Mizlo had 9 yards on three carries.
Snyder had one completion for 8 yards to Zach Alexander.
Defensively, Geneseo only allowed Sandwich 101 rushing yards and 30 passing yards. The Green Machine forced four fumbles.
“I am real proud of these guys,” said Johnsen. “They had their backs up against the wall this season and really played with guts.”
The Green Machine (6-4 overall) will host Coal City at 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at Bob Reade Field.
