Blog: Health officials learn how to work with media

The Henry and Stark County Health Department announces that members of

its staff recently attended a Public Healthcare - Media Relations Training

sponsored by the IDPH (Illinois Department of Public Health) Learning

Management Systems. RaeAnn Tucker-Marshall, Health Department Director of

Public Information; Betty McNaught, RN Department Director of Emergency

Services; and Naomi Stahl, Department Administrative Assistant-Human

Resources attended the training held recently in Galesburg.

The training's goal was to give participants strategies and tactics for

handling a variety of media contacts; including the gathering and

verification of information, and the coordination and dissemination of

information to mainstream news reporters during a major incident, including

the use of the Joint Information System and Joint Information Center.

Tucker-Marshall notes, "Through this class we gained insights into the

culture of news media: Who they are, What they do, and Why they do it. The

knowledge we took away from this training covered real-world practical

skills and techniques that will dramatically increase our effectiveness in

dealing with the media."

Tucker-Marshall adds, "Participants attending the media relations

training included: public health professionals; hospital preparedness

program staff; subject matter experts, and public information professionals

and staff."
