  • Rita L. Mapes, 94, of Atkinson, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at the Geneseo Good Samaritan Village. A funeral Mass celebrating her life was held Saturday, Nov. 3 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Atkinson. The Rev. R. Anthony Lee officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Atkinson.   • Rita L. Mapes, 94, of Atkinson, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at the Geneseo Good Samaritan Village. A funeral Mass celebrating her life was held Saturday, Nov. 3 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Atkinson. The Rev. R. Anthony Lee officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation was held Friday, Nov. 2 at the Atkinson Chapel of Vandemore Funeral Home, where a Rosary was recited. Memorials may be directed to the Rita Mapes Memorial Fund.
    She was born on June 27, 1918, in Geneseo, the daughter of Joe and Lucy (Hoogerwerf) Verbeckmoes. She was a graduate of Atkinson High School. She married Elmer F. Mapes on July 23, 1938, in Atkinson. He died in 2001. She was a homemaker and belonged to St. Anthony's Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. Her hobbies and special interests were too numerous to mention, but she enjoyed artwork, seamstress work, theatrical productions and golfing.
    Survivors include two sons and spouses, Steve and Diana Mapes of Atkinson and Frank and Sherri Mapes of Atkinson; three daughters and spouses, Mary and Randall Arnold of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., Kris and Brian Johnson of Arcadia, Calif. and Julianne and John Puentes of Geneseo; 20 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one sister, Donna Hufeld of Joliet. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Jerry "Jocko" Wancket; two brothers, Ivan Verbeckmoes and Rex Verbeckmoes and one sister, Noreen DeMarini.
