Officials with Black Hawk College and the Regional Office of Education are sponsoring the GED Checkup at the college’s Community Education Center in downtown Kewanee at 6 p.m. Dec. 5.
The GED (General Educational Development) is an equivalency certificate for completing high school.
In 2014, changes will be made to GED requirements. In January 2014, there will be a new test and new testing process. Anyone who hasn’t completed the GED testing by then will have to start over under the new program.
“We will give people the chance to learn the advantages of getting their GED now, rather than waiting until the new GED gets underway,” said David Harris, Community Education Center coordinator. “We’ll also help them figure out how many tests they have left to take.”
The GED Checkup event will feature a short presentation on current test requirements and new requirements for 2014. Participants will then work one-on-one with an adviser to develop a personal plan for completing their GED.
“Students have a little more than a year to complete their GED. Starting in 2014 they will need to start the testing over again,” said Harris.
Black Hawk College’s Community Education Center offers free GED classes from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays.
In addition to classroom instruction, other GED preparation options include studying with books or studying via computer programs.
