Geneseo vs. Limestone/Galesburg

Twenty-six wins and 17 pins over two matches helped the Leafs dominate on the road against Limestone and Galesburg Dec. 4.

"We did not have a single loss in two duals, except for the forfeit at 220-lbs.," said head coach Jon Murray. "There were a few close matches, but we definitely out-matched them. Our guys are just on right now, mentally, technically and physically."

In the first match of the night, the Leafs defeated Limestone, 65-6.

Antonio Tumbarello (106-pounds) started things off for Geneseo with a pin in 3 minutes and 4 seconds, followed by Jon Warner's (113-lbs.) pin in :59, and Hunter Grau (120-lbs.) with a 9-0 major decision win.

Tristan Thies (126-lbs.) notched another Leaf pin in 3:26, while Cody Bormann (132-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 4:48, and Josh Dodge (138-lbs.) came up with a pin in 5:44.

Jarred Bruce (145-lbs.) escaped with a 9-8 win, followed by Joey Medina (152-lbs.) with a 4-2 decision win, and Cole Hunzeker (160-lbs.) earned a 15-3 majo decision win.

Ryan Pitra (170-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 1:59, while Brandon Mizlo (189-lbs.) came up with a pin in 2:47, and Asa Schackelford (195-lbs.) won his match, 1-0.

Cameron Panicucci (285-lbs.) received a forfeit and the Leafs forfeited the 220-lb. match.

Against Galesburg, Geneseo emerged with a 66-6 victory.

Grau (120-lbs) gave Geneseo its first win by pin in 1:59 after Warner (113-lbs.) received a forfeit.

Thies (126-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 2:57, followed by pins from Bormann (132-lbs.) in 1:00; Dodge (138-lbs.) in 1:15; Bruce (145-lbs.) in 3:59; Medina (152-lbs.) in 2:46; Hunzeker (160-lbs.) in 3:09 and Pitra (170-lbs.).

Mizlo (182-lbs.) pulled out a 4-0 decision win in his match, while Schackelford (195-lbs.) pinned his opponent in :45. Panicucci (285-lbs.) captured a 1-0 win, while Tumbarello (106-lbs.) pinned his opponent. The Leafs forfeited the 220-lb. bout.

"Last night, Brandon Mizlo, who weighed in at 170-lbs. wrestled at 182-lbs., and beat Galesburg's top guy, who is a state-ranked kid," said Murray. "Cole Hunzeker, a freshman, got two nice wins over a couple of tough kids on varsity, too."

Geneseo at Rockford East Invitational

The Geneseo varsity wrestling team claimed the Rockford East Invitational championship over the weekend with a team score of 235 Dec. 1.

Geneseo brought home six first-place finishes, along with two seconds, three thirds and one fifth.

"Definitely all of our tournaments are good preparation for the more important tournaments at the end of the year," said Murray. "This is the best we have ever done and there were six champions. This also is the first time I remember winning a tournament besides conference and regionals."

Nabbing championships were Grau at 120-lbs., Thies at 126-lbs., Bruce at 138-lbs., Josiah Cropp at 145-lbs., Pitra at 170-lbs. and Mizlo at 182-lbs.

Medina at 152-lbs. and Panicucci captured second-place finishes. Tumbarello at 106-lbs., Warner at 113-lbs. and Lane Akre at 195-lbs. placed third for the Leafs, while Dodge at 132-lbs. took fifth.

"This is a pretty solid tournament and nobody had an easy walk through. They were all tested," said Murray.

Geneseo JV at UT


Geneseo's junior varsity wrestling team had a successful weekend as the Leafs took home first-place honors at the Dec. 1 UT Invitational.

"The JV did great," said Murray. "The good thing about that was it was nice to win a varsity and JV tournament on the same day. When you go out and win in the same day it shows our depth, and I was really happy about that."

Capturing invite titles were Gunner Gaines, Gage Blackert and Nick Verbeck, while Jake DePauw, Clayton Kennedy, Bormann, Tom Carlson, Hunzeker and Schackelford took second.

Placing third were Jeremy Harper, Levi Warren and Paul Kastorff and Justin Cain came in fourth.

Geneseo vs. Rock Island/ LaSalle-Peru

On the road Nov. 29, the Geneseo wrestling team slid by Rock Island, 36-28 and defeated LaSalle-Peru, 58-14.

"We are doing great, and all together, I am happy with them every time out," said Murray. "They fight every time out, and I am proud of how they are grinding through every situation and hitting what we work on in practice."

In the Rock Island match, the Leafs received wins from Warner (113-lbs.) in a 12-6 decision; Thies (132-lbs.) with a pin in 4:35; Pitra (170-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 4:14; Mizlo (182-lbs.) with a pin in 4:43; Akre (195-lbs.), a pin in 7:50; and Panicucci (285-lbs.) received a forfeit.

Those falling short of victory included: Tumbarello (106-lbs.), 12-9 decision; Grau (120-lbs.), pinned in :38; DePauw (126-lbs.), pinned in :44; Bruce (138-lbs.), 7-3 decision; Cropp (145-lbs.), 8-4 decision; Medina (152-lbs.), 6-5 decision; Nate Johnson (160-lbs.), 15-5 major decision; and Schackelford (220-lbs.), 8-5 decision.

Against LaSalle-Peru, Geneseo posted 11 wins out of the 14 weight classes.

Warner started things off with a pin of his opponent in 1:49, followed by pins from Grau in 3:00; Thies in 2:00; and Dodge (132-lbs.) in 1:36.

Bruce nabbed a 7-2 victory in his match, while Cropp won by a 10-2 major decision. Medina came up with a pin in 2:17, followed by Johnson in 3:45; Pitra in 1:50; and Mizlo in 3:58. Panicucci nabbed a 3-1 decision win.

Tumbarello suffered a 13-1 major decision loss, while Schackelford was pinned and Akre lost in a 14-3 major decision.

Geneseo will next host Alleman and Morrison at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 12.
