  • Ethelwyn "Ethel" C. Barnes, 89, of Geneseo, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at her daughter's home in Peoria. Per her request, cremation rites have been accorded A private burial will be Friday, Dec. 28 at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at Barney's Bar and Grill, Geneseo from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to OSF Hospice, 2265 W. Altorfer Drive, Peoria, 61615. Vandemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
    Ethel was born on Feb. 11, 1923, in Andalusia, the daughter of Clair Reed and Ada (Kane) Reed. She grew up in Andalusia and attended Rock Island High School in Rock Island. She married John R. Barnes in 1948 in Rock Island. He died in 1983, but she lived nearly all of her married life in Geneseo. They were happily married for 34 years.
    She enjoyed reading, gardening, and making sure the squirrels and birds were fed. She always rooted for the Chicago Cubbies and the Chicago Bears, no matter how well they played. Her biggest joy in life was her family and was proud of what they all have accomplished in their lives.
    Survivors include four daughters, Pamela Douglas of Geneseo, Patricia (Michael) Sheridan of Bellevue, Wash., Beth Shaw of Peoria and Debi (Joel) Freudenthal of Selah, Wash.; two sons, Robert Barnes and Daniel (Kara) Barnes of Geneseo; one brother, Wayne (Dorothy) Reed of Odenville, Ala.; three grandchildren, Britni Shaw Perkins, Karrigen Barnes and Emilia Freudenthal; one great grandchild, Caeleigh Perkins; and one sister-in-law, Donna Reed of Benton, La. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John "Bob" Barnes; brother, James Reed; and son-in-law, Thomas Douglas.
