  • Vernon C. "Vern" Carlson, 68, of Rock Island, formerly of Geneseo, died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Trinity Rock Island. Memorial services celebrating his life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Geneseo Chapel of Vandemore Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Ltd. Per his request, cremation rites have been accorded and inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Vern Carlson Memorial Fund and will be used for the betterment and welfare of adults and children.
    Vern was born on Nov. 29, 1944, in Geneseo, the son of Carl and Carol (Johnson) Carlson. He was a 1962 graduate of Atkinson High School and earned his psychology degree from Augustana College in 1973. In 1987, he earned a master's degree in counseling from Western Illinois University. He had been a counselor at the Riverside Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center in Rock Island counseling substance abuse patients. Previously, he did counseling work at the Bethany Home in Moline helping troubled youth.
    He was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and was very involved in senior care. He was a former member of the Robert Young Center for Community Mental Health's Geriatric Care Planning Committee and developed an alcohol and drug treatment program for the geriatric population. He loved reading, restoring classic cars, drag racing and listening to music.
    Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Ruthann and Roger Carton of Geneseo; a niece and spouse, Heather and Drew DeBrock of Geneseo; a nephew, Adam Carton of Milan; a great niece, Leah Walker and two great nephews, Alex Walker and Aiden Carton. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Kenneth Hutchinson.
