The Geneseo varsity girls' basketball team closed out play in the first of its two holiday tournaments over the weekend as the girls placed fourth in the Ottawa Tournament.
Geneseo vs. Yorkville
Geneseo advanced to the third-place match of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament Dec. 22 where the girls squared off against Yorkville, but came up short, 39-29, to finish fourth.
Geneseo grabbed the early lead in the first quarter, 8-6, but a 16-point second quarter by Yorkville gave the Foxes control of the game, 22-12 at the half. The Lady Leafs were held to only four points in the second quarter.
Yorkville put a little distance between them and the Lady Leafs as the Foxes posted 13 points in the third and Geneseo scored nine for a 35-21 score. The Lady Leafs finished the game with eight points in the fourth, while Yorkville was limited to four.
Jamie DeFauw was the leading scorer for the Lady Leafs, hitting four shots from the field, followed by Molly DeBrock scoring six points off two field goals and two free throws.
Emily Ford drained the three pointer and a field goal for her five points, while Anna Wise added four points on two field goals, and Darci Dietrich scored two off a field goal.
Geneseo vs. Joliet Catholic
The Lady Leafs fell to 5-7 on the year with a 58-43 loss in bracket play of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament Dec. 21 to Joliet Catholic.
Joliet Catholic jumped out to a 19-8 lead over the Lady Leafs in the first quarter, but Geneseo bounced back in the second quarter as the squad posted 16 points and held Joliet Catholic to nine for the 28-24 score in favor of Joliet Catholic at the half.
Joliet Catholic put a 10-point gap between them and Geneseo in the third quarter, 44-34, with Joliet Catholic posting 17 points to Geneseo's 10. Joliet Catholic sealed the victory in the fourth as the squad outscored Geneseo, 12-9.
Ford and DeBrock teamed up for 24 of Geneseo's 43 points with 12 points apiece. Ford knocked down two shots from beyond the arc, a field goal and four free throws, and DeBrock drained six shots from the field.
DeFauw chipped in eight points off four field goals, while Wise scored five off two field goals and a free throw. Dietrich finished with four points as she went 2-for-3 from the line and a field goal, followed by Abby Marmion with two points on two free throws.
The Lady Leafs (5-8 overall) continue with action in the State Farm Classic this weekend. Game times and opponents are to be determined.
