Irene Josephine Jensen of Geneseo, died Thursday morning, Dec. 27, 2012, at the extended care unit of Hammond-Henry Hospital, five days after celebrating her 96th birthday.
For the past 21 months, Irene's long-time neighbor and friend, Bonnie Johnsen, has been a constant loving comfort to her and her family. Irene's family is very grateful to Bonnie along with the HHH staff and Hospice Compassus.
Irene was born on Dec. 22, 1916, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Carl and Cora (Zerbel) Priebe. She was reared and educated in Marquette, Mich. On May 6, 1936, she married her high-school sweetheart, John William Jensen, in Marquette. John died in 1985.
Irene was a 64-year resident of Geneseo, and was employed for 32 years at the Geneseo Telephone Company, retiring in 1980 as head operator. She greatly enjoyed her family, church, garden and traveling. She was past Grand Matron of the Geneseo Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Geneseo First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her cousin, Elsie (Zerbel) Basal of Marquette; her son-in-law, Stanley Hutchinson of Sierra Madre, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Gretchen Jensen of Lake Midway, Nova Scotia; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren and her long-time friend, Verla Shelton of Geneseo. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lois I. Hutchinson; her son, Donald C. Jensen; and one great granddaughter, Jamilyne H. Fisher.
A memorial service will be held in Marquette at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Geneseo First Lutheran Church.
