Genevieve L. "Jenny" VanHerzeele, 78, of Geneseo, formerly of Atkinson, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at the Aledo Nursing and Rehab Center, Aledo. A Mass of Christan Burial was held Thursday, Jan. 10 at St. Malachy Catholic Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Michael Pakula officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation was held Wednesday, Jan. 9 at the Geneseo Chapel of Vandemore Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Ltd., where a scripture service was held. Memorials may be left to the Atkinson American Legion or the Geneseo VFW Auxiliary.
Jenny was born on April 1, 1934, in Laverne, Minn., the daughter of Walter and Ruth (Egert) Henry. She was a graduate of Geneseo High School. She married Francis VanHerzeele on Feb. 20, 1954, in Geneseo. He died in 1999. Jenny assisted in the operation of the Atkinson Feed Mill with her husband, Francis, for many years. She worked as a cook at Hillcrest Home in Geneseo and, in later years, sat and cared for the elderly in Geneseo and Atkinson.
Jenny belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Atkinson and the church's Altar and Rosary Society, of which she was secretary for two years. She was active in church activities and was a lector there as well. Jenny was named volunteer of the year by her Altar society for service to the Peoria Diocese and St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She sang in the St. Anthony's Resurrection Choir and was a member of the Atkinson Women's Club for several years. She later joined St. Malachy's Church and their Altar Society, and sang in the St. Malachy Resurrection Choir. She was a member of the Geneseo Kitchen Band for many years and enjoyed the group. Jenny, formerly, was in charge of the Atkinson Meal Site at the Heritage Square and her pastimes included singing, reading, doing puzzles, playing Yahtzee, and watching old movies and the news.
Survivors include one brother, Walter L. (Linda) Henry of Geneseo; one sister, JoAnn (George) Carlier of Altona, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Jerome and Burdell; three sisters, Margaret, Alice and Mary; and an infant sister, Barbara.
