The novel "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park has been selected by Geneseo Middle School students as the 2013 "On the Same Page" book.
For the past four years, middle school students have volunteered their time to select an "On the Same Page" novel for the community.
The book "A Long Walk to Water" features two main characters. Nya is a young Sudanese girl in 2008 who must walk for hours to the lake bed twice a day to fetch water for her family. Her life will change if a well can be provided for her village.
Alternating sections of the novel tell the story of Salva, one of Sudan's "lost boys" who is forced to flee his village in 1985.
Though Nya's story is fictional, Salva's is based on his own life experiences. The book is recommended for readers age 10 and older.
As part of the "On the Same Page" program, funds donated by community groups and organizations are used to purchase approximately 300 copies of the book.
Copies are then made available — for free — to members of the public who are encouraged to read the book and pass it along to others.
Free copies of the book are available at the Geneseo Middle School office during school hours starting Jan. 11.
