Herbert Sherman Lohman, 97, Hillsdale, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at the Hillsdale United Methodist Church, Hillsdale. Burial will follow at Mount Maria Cemetery, Hillsdale. A visitation was held Thursday, Jan. 24 at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Erie, where a Masonic service was held. Memorials may be made to the Hillsdale United Methodist Church or to Hillcrest Home, Geneseo.
Herb was born on Oct. 18, 1915, in Dodge Center, Minn., the son of Herman and Esther (Loughin) Lohman. In 1919, his family settled in rural Hillsdale and established a farm. He attended the one-room Enterprise School and high school in Hillsdale. He took post-graduate work classes in agriculture at Geneseo High School, graduating in 1933. Herb later became a school board member of the Enterprise School. He married Mary Jane Atwood on Aug. 11, 1940, in Geneseo. She died on Jan. 20, 1990. They lived on the Lohman farm for their entire married lives and farmed for a living.
He held memberships in the Hillsdale United Methodist Church, Hillsdale United Methodist Men, Farm Bureau, Erie Masonic Lodge No. 667, and many antique auto clubs. Herb spent his free time collecting, restoring, and showing antique Fords. He enjoyed antique tractors and cars, collecting 70 antique cars through his years. He is the last of the original eight who started the Mississippi Valley Antique Auto Club of the Quad Cities. He enjoyed many years of fishing in Minnesota with family and friends and loved to travel the world.
Survivors include his sons, Ronald (Pamela) Lohman of Erie, Richard (Mary) Lohman of Eldridge, Iowa, and David Lohman of Hillsdale; former daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Lohman of East Moline; son-in-law, Michael Christiansen of Racine, Wis.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; daughter, Sheryl Christiansen; and a granddaughter, Jana Kay Lohman.
