  • The Geneseo High School sophomore boys’ basketball team suffered two losses over the weekend as the Leafs fell to Yorkville and Ottawa.
    Geneseo vs. Yorkville
    Geneseo suffered a tough road loss to host Yorkville Jan. 26 as the Foxes defeated the Leafs, 65-53.
    The Leafs opened with the 14-11 lead in the first quarter, but the Foxes posted 16 points to Geneseo’s nine in the second to grab the 27-23 advantage at the half.
    After the break, Yorkville caught fire and knocked down 26 points, while Geneseo scored 13 to make it a 53-36 ball game in favor of the Foxes.
    Geneseo put up 17 points in the fourth quarter, while Yorkville scored 12, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the win.
    Leading the effort for Geneseo was Greg Rusk, posting a team-high 18 points, knocking down two shots from beyond the arc and six field goals.
    Logan Lanphere, Drew Himmelman and Adam Lavine combined for 24 of the team’s 53 points with eight apiece, all three drained four shots from the field.
    Josh Beard added seven points to the effort with a triple and two field goals; while Tyler Mackey scored three points on a field goal and a free throw, and Alex Dichiser went 1-for-2 from the line for his long point of the game.
    Geneseo vs. Ottawa
    The sophomores couldn’t hold on to their halftime lead against Ottawa as the Pirates rallied in the fourth quarter to steal the 42-38 victory Jan. 25.
    Geneseo took control of the game early with a 18-9 lead in the first quarter, and carried a 21-12 advantage into halftime. Both squads were limited to only three points each in the second quarter.
    The Pirates began to chip away at the Leafs’ lead in the third quarter as they outscored Geneseo, 14-7 to give the Leafs the two-point lead, 28-26.
    Ottawa put up 16 more points in the fouth quarter to Geneseo’s 10 to claim the victory, 42-38.
    Rusk and Mackey led the offensive effort for the Leafs with double figures — Rusk had 11 points off three shots from the field, a three pointer and two free throws, and Mackey scored 10 as he drained two shots from beyond the arc, a field goal and a free throw.
    Himmelman added nine points as he hit four field goals and a free throw, followed by Beard with five points off a trey and two free throws.
    Lanphere and Lavine finished the game with two points each, both hit a field goal.
    The sophomores will next host LaSalle-Peru at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 2.
