  • Lady Leafs split in action on the road

  • The Geneseo High School varsity girls’ basketball team went 1-1 in action this past week as they grabbed a win over Streator, but fell to Yorkville.

  • The Geneseo High School varsity girls’ basketball team went 1-1 in action this past week as they grabbed a win over Streator, but fell to Yorkville.
    Geneseo vs. Yorkville
    Despite double-digit efforts from Emily Ford and Molly DeBrock, the Lady Leafs were unable to pull out the win against the other side of the conference Jan. 26. Yorkville notched a 47-40 victory in girls’ basketball action.
    Ford posted 15 points to lead the team as she knocked down six shots from the field and three free throws; while DeBrock chipped in 12 points as she hit 6-of-11 from the line and three field goals.
    Jamie DeFauw added six points on two field goals and two free throws; followed by Darci Dietrich with four points off two field goals.
    Anna Wise finished the game with two points on a field goal, and Kaylie Piekos scored her lone point on a free throw.
    Yorkville nabbed the 13-8 lead in the first quarter, but Geneseo put up 14 points to Yorkville’s 12 in the second for a 25-22 halftime score in favor of the Foxes.
    After the break, Yorkville scored 11 points and held Geneseo to nine for a 36-31 score. In the fourth quarter, the Foxes sealed the victory with another 11 points to the Lady Leafs’ nine.
    Geneseo vs. Streator
    The Lady Leafs spread the scoring wealth around Jan. 24 on their way to a 47-25 victory over host Streator.
    Geneseo opened with a 12-7 lead in the first quarter, and raked in 18 points in the second as the Lady Leafs held Streator scoreless. Geneseo took the 30-7 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
    The Lady Leafs scored eight more points in the third quarter to Streator’s seven for a 38-14 ball game in favor of Geneseo. The Bulldogs outscored the Lady Leafs 11-9 in the fourth quarter, but Geneseo was able to come away with the 22-point victory.
    DeBrock led the team with eight points as she knocked down four shots from the field.
    Ford pitched in seven points off three field goals and a free throw; while Rori Westerlund scored six as she hit three field goals.
    Wise, Dietrich and DeFauw combined for 15 points with five apiece — Wise drained a shot from beyond the arc and a field goal, Dietrich hit two field goals and a free throw, and DeFauw went 3-for-4 from the line and one field goal.
    Piekos finished the game with four points as she sank a triple and a free throw, followed by Abby Marmion with three points off a trey. Audrey Anderson and Rachel Ganson added two points apiece, both with a field goal.
    The Lady Leafs (12-13 overall and 4-4 in the NIB 12) will host LaSalle-Peru tonight at 7:30 p.m.
