  • Mary L. DeSplinter, 93, a lifelong resident of Annawan, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo. A funeral Mass celebrating her life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan. The Rev. Mark Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Annawan. A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Atkinson Chapel of Vandemore Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be left to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan; Sacred Heart Cemetery, Annawan; or Annawan Fire and Rescue.
    She was born on March 23, 1919, in Annawan, the daughter of Peter and Emma (Schoutteet) VanDeKerre. She married Lawrence DeSplinter Sr. on Sept. 14, 1937, in Annawan. Mary and Lawrence owned and operated Red and White Grocery Store for 20 years, and later she worked as an assembler at Harper Wyman. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Altar and Rosary, Blue Cross Sewing Circle, WATCH Program and Bloodmobile Chairman. She received the first Volunteer of the Year Award in 1995 from Sacred Heart Church and also the Pierre Marquette Award from the Bishop in 2006. She enjoyed playing cards with her many friends and traveling to visit relatives, especially to Belgium. Mary also was an avid Cubs fan.
    Survivors include one son, Jim (Cheryl) DeSplinter of Moline; one daughter, Barb DeSplinter of Kewanee; seven grandchildren, Kevin Cathelyn, Brad DeSplinter, Rob DeSplinter, Tim Willage, Sheila Schierer, Nicole Smith and Seth DeSplinter; 15 great grandchildren, Eddie and Will Cathelyn; Ashlie Hamilton; Jamie Schaab; Andrew and Bobbi DeSplinter; Bryan, Evan and Kristin DeSplinter; Kendra, Tyler and Calab Willage; Zoye, Anna and Ty Schierer and one on the way; two great-great grandchildren, Mackenzie Hamilton and Emma DeSplinter; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna (John) Schultz; one brother, Walter VanDeKeere; and one granddaughter, Kamey Cathelyn.
