A new Casey's gas station will be constructed near Interstate 80 in Geneseo.
The Geneseo Plan Commission unanimously approved a site plan submitted by Casey's and Arc Design for a new store at 100 Bestor Drive, the former Subway location.
"We're pretty excited. We hope this helps launch that area," said Geneseo mayor Linda Van Der Leest.
A new 4,223 square foot store will be constructed featuring four gas islands, each with two pumps. The new structure will face Route 82, as opposed to the former Subway building, which faced Bestor Drive.
"The building will face Route 82, which will be a whole new layout for that area," said Van Der Leest.
The Casey's store located north of Geneseo will remain open.
"One of the first things they told us was they plan to keep the other store open," said Van Der Leest.
The mayor said the first seeds for the project were planted during a meeting in Chicago.
"Last spring break, I took a couple of days to go into Chicago to meet with people who I believe to be 'players' in the growth of our city," she explained. "One person I met with was Musa Tadros of Crown Commercial Real Estate and Development Inc. It was a great meeting and we were able to share goals and vision for our city, in particular the I-80 interchange.
"Throughout the entire process, we have remained in close contact with the people from Casey's and Mr. Tadros. This early partnership with Mr. Tadros and eventually the people from Casey's had a lot to do with Casey's opening a new store," said Van Der Leest.
The entrance to the proposed Casey's property will be from the north and no new turn lane off Route 82 will be needed.
However the Bestor Drive entrance/exit to the site will need to be redesigned and moved approximately eight feet to the east, according to city documents.
Van Der Leest said the new Casey's gas station could potentially be opened as early as October.
