  • Evelyn M. Kleinau, 92, Geneseo, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Long Term Care Unit. A funeral Mass celebrating her life was held Thursday, Feb. 14 at St. Malachy Catholic Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Michael Pakula officiated. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery. A visitation was held one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be left to the National Alliance on Mental Health or the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. Vandemore Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Ltd., Geneseo assisted the family with arrangements.
    She was born on Aug. 22, 1920, in rural Atkinson, the daughter of Edward and Lillian (Veire) Engels. She married Leslie W. Kleinau on Feb. 5, 1947, in Geneseo. He died in 1987. She had been a custodian at Geneseo High School and also did house cleaning for several Geneseo families. She was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church, Geneseo and Altar and Rosary Society Circle 13 of the church. She also belonged to the Gold Star Mothers’ Organization of the Nations Fallen Soldiers. She enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, participating in several activities, collecting information on family and friends via newspaper articles since 1935.
    Survivors include one son, James “Shorty” (Deborah) Kleinau of Manhattan, Kan.; seven nieces and seven nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, SP.4 Carl E. Kleinau (Dec. 2, 1947 to April 30, 1969) when he was killed in Lai Khe, Vietnam from wounds received while on duty; one brother, Alvin Engels and one sister, Eunice McLane.
