Ruby Rosalie Tanner, 93, of Geneseo, formerly of Hillsdale, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Hammond-Henry Hospital Long Term Care, Geneseo. Services will be private. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery, Hillsdale. Memorials may be made to Hammond Henry Long Term Care, c/o Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, PO Box, 119, Port Byron, IL 61275.
She was born on Dec. 23, 1919, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Felix and Phoebe Hicks. She married Charles Tanner on May 3, 1941, in Prophetstown. Charles and Ruby owned Tanners Grocery Store, where Ruby worked until they retired in 1972. She then worked part time at Tate's Locker and Processing in Hillsdale, Four Seasons in Geneseo and volunteered at Hammond-Henry Hospital. Following retirement, she and Chuck traveled extensively. She also enjoyed her time spent with grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Charles; daughters, Barbara (Edward) Simpson of Port Byron and Sandra (Jerry) Tate of Geneseo; four granddaughters, Susan (Trent) Lorfeld of Cordova; Sandra Andrews of Davenport, Iowa; Emily (Jeff) Snyder of Geneseo; and Sarah (Kevin) Neff of Geneseo; great grandchildren, Chase and Clark Whitsell and Allie Lorfeld of Cordova; Spencer Andrews of Iowa City, Iowa; Sawyer Andrews of Davenport; Tate and Bode Neff of Geneseo; step great grandchildren, Nick, Luke and Emily Snyder of Geneseo and Drew Snyder of Iowa City; and a brother, Arthur Hicks of Cordova. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Hicks, and sisters, Alice Brown and Margaret Pettit.
