Geneseo senior Alex Platz, whose goal this season was to break the school’s long-standing pole vault record of 14-2 set back in 1974 by Rich Johnson, broke that record in the first meet of the season as he cleared 14-3 at the Knox College Invite Feb. 22. ‘I was shocked,’ said head coach Don Fredericks. ‘I don’t know if he was, but it was his goal this season to do that. For him to do that in the first meet is jaw dropping. The reaction after was awesome, and I will never forget it. The smile on his face was priceless. He has really invested a lot and busted his tail in the offseason and during the season. It will be fun to see how high he can take the school record and his teammate, Jay Wilson, has his eye on that school record. They push each other and it is healthy competition.’ To watch Platz’s record-setting vault go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-GT1bo0iYk.
