After only one year on the bench as the head coach for the Geneseo varsity volleyball team, Joni Nelson has resigned as the leader of the Lady Leafs.
"It was definitely a hard decision," said Nelson. "Now starting as head coach for the girls' track team and my master's program at St. Ambrose University it just conflicted. I couldn't do everything."
Nelson said what she enjoyed most about her time with the volleyball team was seeing the girls have a successful season, and the girls on her squad.
"We had a successful season, and I had a great group of girls for my first year," she said. "The volleyball program is taking off and it was great to be a part of it."
For Nelson, the biggest challenge she faced was being a head coach for two varsity sports and the demands that come with each program year round.
"I think the girls were surprised, but I didn't make the decision until after track started and my masters' program started," said Nelson. "It was really just a time issue, and I think they all understood.
"I am really going to miss a lot. I am really going to miss the summer stuff with league and camps. It was fun. Some girls I coached for three years, and it will be hard to give up the competitiveness of the games."
