  • Obituary: Delbert Nicklaus

  • Delbert August Nicklaus, 78, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Ave., Iowa City. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Memorials may be made to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation designated for the men's basketball program.

  • Delbert August Nicklaus, 78, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.     Del was born on Jan. 4, 1935, in Parkersburg, Iowa, the son of August and Tillie Nicklaus. He attended UNI on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1957. From 1957 to 1959, Del served his country in the White House under Eisenhower. He married Karen Troen in Newton, Iowa on July 2, 1961. Del spent his entire career in teaching, coaching and athletic administration, including 26 years at Geneseo High School. He retired in 1995.
    Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Karen; children, Kristi (Ken) Markuson of Libertyville and Tor (Laura) Nicklaus of North Liberty, Iowa; and grandchildren, Claire and Luke Markuson and August and Samuel Nicklaus.
