Area residents seeking a high-intensity workout may find themselves at Maple Leaf Crossfit, one of Geneseo's newest businesses.
Owned by Geneseo graduate Paul Rahn, Maple Leaf Crossfit is located in the Small Business Incubator north of Geneseo.
"I was born and raised in Geneseo, but I've spent the past few years working in Chicago," said Rahn. "I always wanted to come back to the area, and after falling in love with crossfit, I knew there was no better place to have my business than in Geneseo."
Crossfit is "a high-intensity, functional movement, constantly varied workout," explained Rahn.
"In less than an hour, you get an intense workout centered on strength and endurance," he said. "Everyday is different. We never do two days exactly the same."
Instead of classes, crossfit offers "WODs" (Workout of the Day).
"If you go to the gym, you might do an hour or two of aerobic exercise, but we tap into anaerobic exercise, which involves short-burst of energy," noted Rahn.
He was first introduced to crossfit after both his mother and his best friend began doing crossfit workouts.
"I was able to watch them and see the results they were getting, and knew it was something I wanted to be involved with," he said.
Rahn has met crossfit certification requirements in order to open his gym.
"When I first decided to open Maple Leaf Crossfit, I struggled to find a proper venue at affordable rental rates," he said.
Rahn was introduced to the Geneseo Small Business Incubator which is designed to help new businesses flourish.
"It was the perfect space. I installed the equipment and flooring and was ready to open in less than two weeks," he said. "My goal is to use the incubator to its fullest extent and max out the number of people I can have in each class. I want us to outgrow our space."
Each WOD at Maple Leaf Crossfit can accommodate up to 18 individuals.
"Any more than that and it takes away from the detail-oriented nature of the classes," he said.
The majority of Maple Leaf Crossfit's clients "have never done crossfit before" said Rahn. "Some have heard of it, but most have never tried any of the movements."
Maple Leaf Crossfit offers WODs at 5:15 a.m., noon, 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and WODs at 5:15 a.m., noon, 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as a 9 a.m. WOD on Saturdays.
"The 5:30 p.m. class on Tuesdays and Thursdays is a beginners experience class offered free of charge," said Rahn.

"When I started, we didn't have the noon class, but people were asking to have one over their lunch hour. I appreciated getting that feedback," he said.
To date, Rahn said his business has been operating through word-of-mouth.
"In general, a number of people come to give it a try and see what it's like."
