  • The Geneseo varsity girls’ soccer team opened the 2013 season against Peoria Notre Dame March 23.
At the end of action, Geneseo and Notre Dame were still locked in 0-0 stalemate and the game was called a tie.
“Being our first game of the season, it was actually a pretty good game,” said head coach Ian Kline. “Defensively, we were very strong and held them to zero shots which is a pretty good accomplishment. We were in control most of the second half, but they had a better first half than we did.”
The Lady Leafs finished the game with six shots on goal, and had zero saves in the net.
Notre Dame had zero shots on goal and made six saves in the net.
“I think we did a lot of good things in the game, but there also are things we need to make improvements on,” said Kline.
“This year’s group is a good cohesive group and will compete together every game. There won’t be a lot of individual play. Every game they will have to play as a team to be successful.
“We are a younger team this year, but we have four seniors who have been with us since they were freshmen so there is that experience. We also have juniors and sophomores who played a lot of minutes last year, but, for the most part, we have new faces in most places. We have some young players who will step up and fill in those shoes (of the girls GHS lost last season) with more team play.”
Geneseo (0-0-1 overall) will be in action next at home against Dixon at 4:30 p.m. April 4.
